"Save Us This Night" - Art inspired by the Passover and Story of Moses

One of my favorite prophets of all time is Moses.  His story is timeless, faith-inspiring, and gives hope that God hears our prayers and is able to help us through our troubles.  So, I decided to make a piece that reflected the night of the passover.

As you may know, Moses (and his brother Aaron) had come to Pharoah to ask that the Children of Israel be freed from slavery.  After a series of plagues, the last would be that the angel of death would come and kill the firstborn in every house that did not have the lamb's blood marking.  The angel of death did come and all of the firstborn, including the Pharoah's own, died.  The lamb's blood demarcation (along with the power of God and the faith from the Children of Israel) saved many lives in this story.

This piece is a mosaic made from handmade ceramic tiles, and shattered glass.  I designed the tiles to look like doors but to each be unique.  All have delicate details and have been glazed with a somewhat "old" looking glaze.  The black line going through the piece represents the angel of death and the line recoils from the red glass placed between it and the door.  The red glass represents the blood on the door posts.

I hope you like it.

To Save All Egypt - Seven Years of Plenty Glass Mosaic

A few months ago I saw a call for artists to apply for the Mosaic Passover Exhibit  at the Museum of Biblical Art (Dallas).  I thought it sounded like a fun challenge, so I applied.  This is the Old Testiment-inspired piece I made that got accepted.  It is based on the the story of Joseph (coat of many colors) who was sold into slavery in Egypt and who rose to a leadership position.  God gave him the gift of interpreting dreams, so he knew that Egypt would have 7 years of plenty of food, followed by 7 years of famine.  He organized a way for the Egyptians to save food during the good times so they would have some in the tougher years to come.  In this story, not only did Joseph save the lives of many Egyptians, he was able to save the lives of his family as well.  This piece was made using cut stained glass.  The seven wheat stalks represent the seven years of plenty.  I chose the colors and patterns to suggest Egyptian design.  I hope you like it.
